Austria always seems just that bit further away than France and Switzerland but there are some real hidden gems to be found. It is actually not that much further to drive. From Calais it is about 11 hours to Innsbruck.

The Tyrol area of Austria is ski touring/mountaineering heaven. It provides endless possibilities from day tours to longer hut to hut routes. The variety is equal to anything you will find around Chamonix and the views and descents are just as spectacular but without quite the seriousness of the terrain in the Western Alps.

Ski touring in Austria is often slightly more economical because the huts tend to be cheaper as are the lifts if you are going to take advantage of uplift. The Austrian Alpine Club have an excellent resource that maps out all the huts and gives details for each. Check out their site: English Version.

If you are looking for somewhere a little different away from the crowds of the Mont Blanc Massif then Austria could be the place. You can combine some quiet day tours around local resorts with embarking on a multi day tour using the comprehensive array of huts.

Bill O’Connor’s Ski Mountaineering Vol.2 covers several ski tours in the Tyrol area and it is also possible to buy maps for the area. Check out the Austrian Alpine Clubs resource, they list all maps of the area, many with ski routes marked.
